How to Plan a Nautical Theme Wedding

by Anchal Bhatia

Nautical theme wedding has always been a popular trend when it comes to planning a summer nuptial and it’s not hard to see why.  In fact, it’s a great way to combine all your love for sea with the people you love. Nautical (if done right) can be a chic and elegant theme for your wedding day. Here are some ideas to pull it off effectively.

Color Theme

While navy blue and white color scheme are perfect for creating a nautical mood, don’t just limit yourself to this traditional color palette. Be bold and incorporate hints of red, yellow, or coral into your color scheme. Alternatively, you can use beige tones as a base color for nautical theme. They complement all shades and work great in creating a natural, seaside feel.

Wedding Invitations

The wedding invitation is the first opportunity to let your guests know about your wedding theme. Pick up invitations that feature sailboats, lighthouses, and other symbols that yell nautical. If you are looking for something simple, consider a navy blue invite with a white knot to complement your wedding theme.

The Location

What says nautical more than a boat? If you are lucky enough to own one, great! Or else you can hire a boat for a day to host your big day. Alternatively, a beachside location is an ideal choice for a nautical theme wedding. You can have the ceremony right on the beach and move the guests to a nearby hall or a restaurant for the reception.

Wedding Decorations

For centerpieces, pick a glass bowl and fill it with sand, starfish, and seashells. If possible, use colored sand to create an ocean scene in the bowls. Or you could choose to go with tall glass vases, containing white pillar candles and wrapped in decorative fishing net.

For other decorations, use traditional navy colors as an accessory. Instead of a white colored tablecloth, adorn the tables with grey or navy blue colored linen. Matching cutlery and glasses will enhance the look. Finally, tie an anchor on a folded napkin and place it on each setting.

Wedding Cake

The wedding cake is generally a bit of a highlight. As it plays an essential role to set the tone, make sure that it lives by your nautical theme. You can either adorn each tier with shells, anchors and pearls that cascade down the side of your cake, or decorate the base of the cake with navy blue or white stripes. Alternatively, a simple navy blue ribbon bow trimmed with white in the front of the cake is a great way to complement the theme without being too flashy.

Wedding Favors

While favors remain optional, they are a great opportunity to display your wedding theme. Look for sailboats or lighthouses, which fit right into your nautical theme. Or else a chocolate bar with a personalized wrapper, packed in a blue organza pouch can make a sweet edible favor. Not to forget, anchor or shell shaped cookies can make interesting nautical theme wedding favors too.
